It is hard to believe we have started the second semester of the school year already! As we move through this school year, we encourage you to check out the Gompers calendar as we have many more activities planned for the upcoming months. The activities will allow students to showcase their academic achievements and also offer time for our families to come together as a whole and embrace the diversity each imparts on our community. Plan to come and enjoy the fun!
As we head into this new semester, it is also time to prepare for 4K and Kindergarten registration. Registration will be held on February 3rd for 4K AND 5K students who did not attend 4K in MMSD. Registration will take place at Gompers from 1:00-6:00 in the LMC. If you have a child that will be 4 (4K) or 5 (5K) by September 1st, 2013 we are asking that you come out to register him/her on the aforementioned dates, again, if your son/daughter did NOT previously enroll in MMSD’s 4K program. Also, this year there will not be general kindergarten screening. If it determined that your child is an English Language Learner via the information you provide during the enrollment process, further assessments will be scheduled at that time. Language assessments will NOT, however, be held the same day as registration.
Additionally, recently you should have received your child’s report card. The report card is a summary of your child’s academic achievement, work habits, and social development for the first half of the school year. Please take time to review the report card with your child to discuss their progress in school. This can be a great time to praise your child for their many academic and social successes and learn where they can make gains. Along with the report card you will be receiving information about the social-emotional learning standards that we use to guide our instruction as well. If you have any questions, please be sure to contact your child’s teacher
And lastly, this will be the last month that you receive the Gompers Gazette in the current online format. At one of our "Pizza with the Principal" listening sessions, the suggestion was made to have our newsletter become more user friendly and formatted more like MMSD’s newsletter. I am pleased to announce we will be making that shift! Next month you will receive the newsletter in an even more user-friendly, accessible format. Additionally, the option to receive the newsletter on paper will still be available, just let our secretary Nancy know if you’d prefer a hard copy.
As always, thanks for all you do for both our school and our community!
Sarah Chaja, Principal
